Dental Exams & Cleanings
Tooth coloured fillings are made from a material called ‘composite resin’. They are bonded to the tooth using a high strength bonding agent and set by a blue wave ‘curing light’.
These fillings have largely replaced amalgam as the go-to dental material in the dental profession. Fillings are needed when a tooth has experienced days, or has broken, or to replace an older filling. Some patients elect to have their old silver fillings replaced with tooth coloured fillings because they look better!
Historically, dental fillings were predominantly made from an ‘amalgam’ of silver, tin copper and mercury; and are commonly called silver fillings. These fillings were often found in the back teeth on the chewing surfaces. Whilst the material lasts a long time, the tooth around them fatigues with time, and then can break.
This results in these teeth needing more extensive treatments like crowns and root therapies in some instances.

Signs That You Need a Tooth Extraction
Many people fear the worst if they have a painful toothache. However, that isn’t the only sign which would indicate your need for a tooth extraction. Here are some of the most common symptoms to keep an eye out for:
- Your tooth is visibly damaged or decayed and repairing or filling it isn’t a possibility.
- The root of your tooth is infected, and a root canal and antibiotics didn’t cure it.
- Your teeth are crowded and there’s not enough room in your mouth to straighten them out with braces.
- You have impacted teeth because there’s not enough space in your jawbone to allow them to properly and healthily grow in.
- You have loose teeth as a result of gum disease.

Fluoride is extra protection against decay in your mouth
Fluoride is the most effective agent available to help prevent tooth decay. Fluoride creates a barrier over the teeth making them much more powerful against acidic and bacterial attacks.
Fluoride works in two ways:
- Topical fluoride strengthens the teeth once they have erupted by mineralising, making the teeth more resistant to decay.
- Systemic Fluoride strengthens the teeth that have erupted as well as those that are erupting
